Nosso Tejo · Praça do Comércio, Sul e Sueste station

The Padrão from the Tagus

Nosso Tejo takes you out on a 1947 wooden cargo boat, hand-painted with flowers, from the river station by Praça do Comércio to Belém Tower and back, with live commentary. It's the cheapest way to see the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) and the most relaxing, as long as you're happy to see it from the water.

Traditional Boat Cruise on the Tagus

About this experience

Nosso Tejo sails from the Sul e Sueste river station, the white building by the water on the left of Praça do Comércio; the meeting point is its ticket office number 8. The boat is a traditional Tagus cargo vessel built in 1947. Visit Lisboa lists two large traditional boats in the company's fleet, a 1947 bote de fragata and a 19th-century varino.

For 105 minutes you head west past the Baixa, under the 25 de Abril bridge and on past MAAT to Belém Tower, then turn back. A guide gives live commentary, often in several languages, and guests mention Portuguese music on board.

The honest bit: you never step off the boat. The Padrão dos Descobrimentos goes by on your right on the way out, and you see the prow and the figures from the river, which is how the monument was designed to face. You don't go up it, and the EUR 10 ticket isn't included (the monument's ticket page). Some guests report late or rescheduled departures when bookings are low, and one called it unguided. Most come back raving about the crew.

What guests say

★★★★★

It was special to experience the Tagus on a traditional boat rather than a modern tourist boat. Pedro was even kind enough to let me steer the boat for a while. A fantastic experience all round.

The tour takes you past so many Lisbon landmarks, a totally different perspective from the water, especially the MAAT, which is really special. [...] Thank you Elisa for your wonderful Fado selection. It was perfect.

Tips before you book

  • Be at ticket office 8 fifteen minutes early, as the operator asks.
  • Bring a layer even in spring. A guest on a windy March trip said it got very cold by the end.
  • Midday in summer is hot on deck. A late-afternoon departure gives you better light on the Padrão and a cooler ride.
  • Want to climb the Padrão too? Take tram 15E or the train to Belém after the cruise: EUR 10, or free with a Lisboa Card.
