Belém Tower reopens

After more than a year behind scaffolding, the tower on the Tagus is open again, cleaned inside and out. The catch: you now enter in timed slots, and they sell out.

Belém Tower closed in April 2025 for its first deep restoration since 1998. It came back in late May 2026 with a new rule: no more open queue on the footbridge, only half-hour entry slots with a fixed number of people in each.

For anyone planning Belém, that changes the order of the day. Below: what was done to the tower, how the slots work, what a ticket costs, the closing days, and how to fit it around the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries), 1 km up the river.

The quick answer

Belém Tower reopened with an official ceremony on 26 May 2026 and has taken visitors since 27 May. Entry is by half-hour slot, about 60 people each, roughly 900 a day. An adult ticket is EUR 15, under-13s go free, and it is closed on Mondays. Book a slot online before you go: on busy days there is nothing left at the kiosk.

When did Belém Tower reopen, and what was restored?

The tower closed in April 2025 and reopened with a ceremony on 26 May 2026; public visits started the next day. The works cleaned and consolidated the stone and renewed windows, plaster and wiring.

The monument's own reopening notice says the official ceremony was on 26 May and that visitors return "a partir de 27 de Maio". It calls the project the first major intervention since 1998, paid for by Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). Time Out Lisboa confirms it had been shut since April 2025.

What actually changed is mostly in the stone. Postal reports a bill of over EUR 1 million and work across the four interior floors, the terrace and the spiral stairs: fungi and lichen removed, degraded joints and cracks repaired, new window frames, plaster, ceilings and electrics. The Portugal News quotes the director promising "a clean face, shining inside and out".

The footbridge now feeds timed groups, not an open queue.

How does the new Belém Tower timed entry work?

You pick a 30-minute slot when you buy. Each slot takes about 60 people, for a daily total of around 900.

The numbers come from Diário de Notícias and Time Out Lisboa: a maximum of 60 entries every half hour, 900 a day, the same slot model the Jerónimos Monastery already uses. For comparison, the tower logged 387,379 visits in 2024, more than a thousand a day, with long waits on the footbridge.

The point is the staircase. The tower has one narrow spiral stair linking its floors, and capping each half hour keeps it moving. Arrive a few minutes before your slot, not 40 minutes early: the queue on the footbridge is exactly what the system replaced. The tower is not wheelchair accessible: the floors are reached only by those stairs.

How much is a Belém Tower ticket in 2026?

EUR 15 for an adult. Visitors over 65 and young people aged 13 to 24 pay half, and children up to 12 go free.

These are the rates on the official Jerónimos and Belém Tower visitor page. A 50% family ticket (at least one adult and one child) exists, but only at the physical ticket office. Residents of Portugal get in free on up to 52 days a year under the Acesso 52 scheme, which since August 2026 can also be booked online.

No audio guide is offered, so the history comes from the panels or from a guide outside. If you also want the Padrão and Jerónimos, add EUR 10 and EUR 18. At that point the Lisboa Card maths starts to work.

How do you book a Belém Tower time slot?

Online on the official MMP ticket shop, or at the kiosk opposite Jerónimos if anything is left. Lisboa Card holders book a free slot with their card number.

The official route is the Belém Tower page on the MMP ticket shop: choose a date, then a half-hour slot, then pay. The visitor page is blunt about walk-ups: tickets "often sell out and cannot be bought on the day itself". The physical kiosk sits in front of the Jerónimos Monastery, sells for both monuments and closes at 16:30.

  • Lisboa Card: exchange your voucher for the physical card first, then book a zero-cost slot on the Lisboa Card page of the same shop using the card number. You cannot reserve before you hold the card.
  • Sold out: resellers such as the Belém Tower ticket tour hold slots. One September 2026 reviewer called it "the only way to get a ticket on short notice".
  • With a tour: the flagship Belém half-day with Jerónimos sells a Belém Tower add-on as one of its options.

What are Belém Tower's opening hours, and is it open on Mondays?

Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00. It is closed every Monday, and the Padrão is not.

The official page lists one timetable all year, with closures on Mondays, 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June (Lisbon's Santo António holiday) and 25 December. It can also close when the weather makes the tower unsafe, which is worth remembering on a stormy winter day.

Jerónimos keeps the same days. The Padrão dos Descobrimentos opens every day, Mondays included, and stays open later. On a Monday in Belém, climb the Padrão and walk the riverside; save the tower and the cloister for another day.

How do you combine Belém Tower with the Padrão dos Descobrimentos?

Walk the riverside: the two are about 1 km apart, 12 to 15 minutes on foot. Book the tower slot first and climb the Padrão last, since it closes later.

A slot pins one part of your day, so build around it. A plan that works: Jerónimos in the morning, lunch and a pastel on Rua de Belém, the tower slot in early afternoon, then walk east along the water to the Padrão. Its lift and 42 steps put you on a terrace with the tower, the bridge and the wind rose below. Our Padrão vs Belém Tower guide compares the two climbs if you only have time for one.

No tour on this site takes you up the Padrão; they stop outside it. The small-group Belém walk gives it 30 minutes and passes the tower too, which is enough for the story. Then use your own EUR 10 ticket for the view. The one-day Belém itinerary has the full timing.

Eight people at most, half an hour at the Padrão and the tower on the route.
