The Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the Monument to the Discoveries, stands at Avenida Brasília on the river in Belém. The official contacts page lists three public transport options: the train to Belém station, tram 15 and buses 714, 727, 728, 729 and 751.
The tram is the one most visitors take and the slowest. The train is faster. Both leave you a few minutes' walk from the monument, with the railway line and Avenida da Índia to cross through an underpass.
The quick answer
Take tram 15E from Praça da Figueira, Praça do Comércio or Cais do Sodré to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos stop, about 25 to 30 minutes. The fare is EUR 3.30 on board, less on a navegante card. The faster option is the Cascais-line train from Cais do Sodré to Belém, about 7 minutes. Cross to the river by the underpass by the Praça do Império garden.

How do you get to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos by tram?
Take tram 15E west to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos stop, 25 to 30 minutes from downtown, then walk through the Praça do Império garden and the underpass to the river.
Tram 15E runs from Praça da Figueira through Praça do Comércio and Cais do Sodré, along the river through Alcântara, and past the MAAT (Altinho stop) to Belém. Board at Praça da Figueira for the best chance of a seat. It is a long modern tram, not one of the little yellow 1930s trams of route 28.
Get off at Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. The garden is in front of you, the monument across the road and the tracks. Allow five minutes to walk it.
How much is the tram 15E fare in 2026?
EUR 3.30 for a single bought on board in 2026. A navegante card loaded with credit brings a single down to about EUR 1.90, and the Lisboa Card covers it.
Pay the driver or the on-board machine; have coins or a card ready. If you will ride more than twice, buy a reusable navegante card at any metro station and load it. The Lisboa Card (EUR 31 for 24 hours) includes the tram, the train and free entry to the Padrão, Jerónimos and Belém Tower; our Lisboa Card post has every price.
| Ticket | Price 2026 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single on board | EUR 3.30 | From the driver or machine |
| Navegante card, single trip | About EUR 1.90 | Card bought once at a metro station |
| Lisboa Card 24 h | EUR 31 | Tram, train, and free entry to the Padrão |
Skip the crowded tram: ride the flat river path to Belém with a guide, a helmet and a snack stop.
Check dates for the bike tour to BelémIs the train to Belém faster than the tram?
Yes. The Cascais-line train from Cais do Sodré reaches Belém station in about 7 minutes, and the station is on the river side of the tracks, close to the monument.
Trains run every 15 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes otherwise in 2026, according to Observador's report on the CP timetable; check cp.pt for the day. Pay with a navegante card or a ticket from the station machine. The Lisboa Card covers the train too.
From Belém station, walk west along the river for about ten minutes. A footbridge next to the station crosses the road and tracks.

Which buses go to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos?
Carris buses 714, 727, 728, 729 and 751 all serve Belém, according to the monument's own page. Check your stop on carris.pt.
Buses are useful from parts of the city the tram doesn't reach. The 727 comes down from Marquês de Pombal; the 714 runs from the centre along the river. Routes and stop names change, so plan the trip on carris.pt or a journey planner on the day. Bus fares are the same as the tram's.
One quirk: on the third Sunday of the month, during the changing of the guard at Belém Palace, several of these buses are diverted around Praça Afonso de Albuquerque.

About EUR 8 to 12 by Uber and EUR 7 to 10 by Bolt from Cais do Sodré, roughly 6 km, according to Lisbon Tourism's 2026 summary. More in rain or rush hour.
Ask for Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Avenida Brasília. Drivers can drop you on the river side, so you skip the underpass. Fares from lisbontourism.org. For two or three people, a ride-hail costs about the same as tram tickets, and it is the best choice with luggage or a pushchair.

Can you walk or cycle along the river to Belém?
Yes. A flat riverside path runs about 6 km from Cais do Sodré to the Padrão, past the docks, the 25 de Abril Bridge and the MAAT.
On foot it takes about an hour and a quarter, more if you stop. By bike it is easy, and the path is shared with runners, so keep the pace sensible on weekends. It is the nicest way in on a clear morning, and you arrive on the river side of the monument with no road to cross.
If you would rather have a guide and a bike sorted, the bike tour and the e-bike tour both follow this path.

Explore the riverside e-bike tour Tour detailsHow do you get from Jerónimos or Belém Tower to the Padrão?
From Jerónimos, cross the garden and take the underpass under Avenida da Índia and the railway, about 500 m. From Belém Tower, walk east along the river, about 1 km.
The monument's accessibility page points to the underground passage by the Praça do Império garden, and there are pedestrian tunnels next to the CCB and footbridges by Belém station and Belém Tower. Don't try to cross the road and tracks on the surface. From Belém Tower the walk is flat and takes 12 to 15 minutes; our Padrão vs Belém Tower guide explains how to do both.

Where can you park near the Padrão dos Descobrimentos?
Parking is tight. There are paid car parks around Belém, including at the CCB, and street spaces by the river that fill early on weekends.
Arrive before 10:00 on a weekend or come on a weekday. The CCB car park on the land side puts you a short walk from the monument through the pedestrian tunnel. For most visitors the train is quicker than finding a space.
No parking, no tram queue: an e-bike along the river with a guide, a pastel de Belém on the way.
