Booking choice: The Belém half-day with Jerónimos, from $71 per person. Check dates Tour details
Belém packs Lisbon's best-known sights into one riverside district: the Jerónimos Monastery, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (the Monument to the Discoveries), Belém Tower and the original pastéis bakery. All of it is within a 15-minute walk. The trouble is the timing. Two of the three monuments close on Mondays, the tower needs a slot, and everyone else arrives at 11:00.
The plan below works Tuesday to Sunday. If you are in Belém on a Monday, skip to the section on Mondays.
The quick answer
Start at Jerónimos at 9:30, have pastéis at 11:00, go up the Padrão at 11:45, eat lunch, take a 14:30 slot at Belém Tower, then the MAAT, the Coach Museum or LX Factory, and end with sunset on the river. With only half a day: Jerónimos, pastéis, the Padrão. On Mondays, the Padrão is the only one open.

What is the best order to see Belém in one day?
Jerónimos first, then pastéis, the Padrão, lunch, Belém Tower on a booked slot, a museum, and the river at sunset.
The timings assume a winter day; add an hour at the end in summer, when the Padrão stays open until 19:00.
| Time | Stop | Ticket 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 9:30 | Jerónimos Monastery cloister and church | EUR 18 (church free) |
| 11:00 | Pastéis de Belém, Rua de Belém | About EUR 1.50 a pastel |
| 11:45 | Padrão dos Descobrimentos, terrace and wind rose | EUR 10 |
| 13:00 | Lunch on Rua de Belém | Pay as you go |
| 14:30 | Belém Tower, timed slot | EUR 15, book ahead |
| 15:45 | MAAT, the Coach Museum or LX Factory | Varies |
| Sunset | The river, from the Padrão steps or the MAAT | Free |
A Lisboa Card (EUR 31 for 24 hours) covers Jerónimos, the Padrão, Belém Tower and the tram, which adds up to more than the card costs. Book the tower slot either way.
Why start at Jerónimos at opening time?
Because the cloister line grows through the morning as tours and coaches arrive. Get in when it opens at 9:30, Tuesday to Sunday.
The cloister costs EUR 18 for adults and EUR 9 for ages 13 to 24 and over 65 in 2026; the church, with the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões, is free. Visit Lisboa lists 9:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00, closed Mondays. Buy online on the official museums ticket desk to skip the ticket line itself. Allow an hour.
A guide makes a difference here. The half-day with Jerónimos includes the ticket, the tomb and a pastel tasting, and ends at the Padrão.

When should you go to Pastéis de Belém?
Right after Jerónimos, around 11:00, before the lunch crowds. It is a two-minute walk east along Rua de Belém and opens at 8:00 every day.
A pastel costs about EUR 1.50 in 2026. There are two lines: takeaway at the counter and tables inside. The sit-down rooms go a long way back and usually move faster than the takeaway line. Cinnamon and icing sugar are on the table. The bakery has used the same recipe since 1837.

A two-hour Belém walk with pastéis included and a guide who knows the story behind the recipe.
Explore the Belém walk with pastéis Tour detailsWhen is the best time to go up the Padrão?
Late morning, before lunch, when the light is high over the wind rose; or late afternoon for warmer light on the river. Last entry is 17:30 in winter and 18:30 in summer.
From Pastéis de Belém, walk back past Jerónimos and through the underpass by the garden to the river. The EUR 10 ticket covers the lift, the terrace and the exhibition; there is no slot to book. Allow 45 minutes to an hour. Walk the world map on the wind rose before or after; it is free. Details in our Padrão tickets guide, and the figures you are looking at are explained in who the 33 figures are.

Where should you eat lunch in Belém?
Along Rua de Belém and the streets facing the Jerónimos garden, where tascas and cafés serve a set lunch. Book ahead for a riverside table on weekends.
Time Out Lisboa keeps a current list of the best restaurants in Belém. For something quick, the cafés on Rua de Belém do grilled fish, bifanas and soup at fair prices. The places with river views near the docks cost more.
The morning sorted for you: the Jerónimos ticket, a guide, a pastel tasting and 20 minutes at the Padrão.

Book a mid-afternoon slot, around 14:30, on the official ticket desk. The tower is a 12 to 15 minute walk west of the Padrão along the river.
Since its reopening in late May 2026, Belém Tower admits about 60 people per half hour, and people without a slot have been turned away on busy days. Tickets are EUR 15. Last entry is 17:00, so don't leave it too late. The full comparison is in Padrão vs Belém Tower.

A timed Belém Tower ticket held for you, with a host who walks you to the door. Non-refundable, so book once your day is fixed.

The MAAT for architecture and a walk on its roof, the Coach Museum for royal carriages, or LX Factory for shops and food on the way back.
- MAAT: the curved white museum on the river, 15 minutes east of the Padrão on foot. Closed Tuesdays. Its sloping roof is public and the best free sunset spot in Belém.
- Coach Museum (Museu Nacional dos Coches): royal coaches near Praça Afonso de Albuquerque, closed Mondays, free with a Lisboa Card.
- LX Factory: a former factory full of shops, bookshops and restaurants in Alcântara, a short ride back towards town on tram 15E.

What if you only have half a day, or it's a Monday?
For half a day, do Jerónimos, pastéis and the Padrão in about four hours. On a Monday, Jerónimos and the tower are shut, so build the day around the Padrão.
Half day (Tuesday to Sunday): Jerónimos at 9:30, Pastéis de Belém at 11:00, the Padrão terrace at 11:45, back on the tram by 13:30. Or join a guided half-day and add the Padrão ticket after.
Monday: the Padrão at 10:00 opening, the wind rose, Pastéis de Belém, then the riverside walk to the MAAT, which opens on Mondays. Belém Tower and Jerónimos can be admired from outside. Some tours run on Mondays and pass both; check the date on the listing.
Getting there and back is in our Belém transport guide.
Four hours of Belém by minivan, eight people at most, 30 minutes at the Padrão and a pastel on the way.

Is one day enough for Belém?
Yes. Jerónimos, Pastéis de Belém, the Padrão and Belém Tower fit into one day with time for a museum, as long as you start at 9:30 and book the tower slot.
What is open in Belém on a Monday?
The Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Pastéis de Belém and the MAAT. Jerónimos, Belém Tower and the Coach Museum close on Mondays.
Should I visit Jerónimos or the Padrão first?
Jerónimos first, at its 9:30 opening, before the queues. The Padrão has no slots and stays open later, so it fits better after.
Is the Lisboa Card worth it for a day in Belém?
Usually. Jerónimos (EUR 18), Belém Tower (EUR 15), the Padrão (EUR 10) and the tram add up to more than the EUR 31 24-hour card.
