Portugal, Me and You · Belém, Praça do Império

Jerónimos, pastéis and the Padrão

A guide walks you through the Jerónimos cloister and church, into Pastéis de Belém for a tasting, then down to the river and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries). It's the most reviewed tour in Belém, with the monastery ticket and the tart both in the price.

Belém Half-Day: Jerónimos Ticket & Pastel Tasting

About this experience

Portugal, Me and You runs this as a three-hour walk around the heart of Belém. You meet under a big pine tree in front of the Museu de Marinha café, where the guide wears a badge with a red stripe. From there it's straight into the Jerónimos Monastery: the two-storey cloister, then the Church of Santa Maria with the tombs of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões. The listing gives this part an hour and a half, the longest monastery visit of any tour on this site.

Then come the tarts. Pastéis de Belém has baked them next door since 1837, to a recipe that came out of the monastery (see the bakery's own history page), and the tasting is part of the price. Guests say some guides take them to the window where you can watch the bakers. The last stop is the Padrão: 20 minutes by the river under Henry the Navigator and the 32 figures behind him, with the wind rose map at your feet.

One thing to know before you book. The tour stops outside the monument. Nobody goes up, and the EUR 10 ticket for the lift, the terrace and the exhibition is not included (prices on the monument's ticket page). The good news: the tour ends right there, so you can buy a ticket at the door and ride up the moment the guide says goodbye. Pick the morning skip-the-line option in summer. Guests describe the Jerónimos queue as long, and there is no shade on it.

  • Jerónimos cloister ticket included, about 90 minutes inside

  • An original pastel de Belém tasting at the 1837 bakery
  • 20 minutes at the Padrão and the wind rose
  • Options with skip-the-line entry, a Belém Tower add-on or a private guide

What guests say

★★★★★

We had a wonderful tour of the Monastery and the Pastel tasting was a bonus. Miguel was a great tour guide and very knowledgeable. [...] He even showed us how they make the Pasteis! All around a great tour.

Lucie made the tour very fun, engaging & expressive. [...] She kept an even pace and managed nearly 20 of us very well, never leaving anyone behind, but also making sure that the tour kept moving and did not make anyone wait around.

It was so nice to just enjoy our surroundings and not worry about logistics since Beatrice was on it! Totally recommend doing the guided option over buying stand alone tickets.

The tour group was a comfortable size, and we traveled at a comfortable pace. I learned a lot about Lisbon's history in addition to the history Monastery. The original pastry was delicious, and it was wonderful to see the pastries being made.

Tips before you book

  • Choose the morning skip-the-line option from June to September. A guest called the monastery line "brutal", with no shade while you wait.
  • Bring an umbrella or a hat. The operator itself warns that Lisbon's sun can be unforgiving, and most of the walk is in the open.
  • Keep the end of the tour free. The Padrão ticket is EUR 10 (EUR 5 for ages 13 to 25, free under 12), and you're standing at its door.
  • Booked the Belém Tower add-on? Your meeting point is Confeitaria Nacional Belém, not the pine tree.
  • Holding a Lisboa Card? It gets you into the Padrão free, so the climb after the tour costs nothing extra.
